SUNDAY

Just finished 5hr clinic of 24 patients! Great for teaching & included the visiting Government Health Workers too. Nothing spectacularly unusual but all ages/sexes. One case of subcutaneous lumps with pigmented skin baffled us! 

?Weather is changing a bit with cloud and wind, & breakfast included an omelette!! A roll of thunder or two, but no rain! (It later became apparent that this was a common pattern of morning sunshine and late afternoon cloud and wind then clearing again at night.)

Lockdown for me, two years ago, shaped ideas of sailing the Southern Ocean with Clipper, having barely set foot in a boat before.  Two years later, and with thanks to skippers' Pete, Kathy and two Pauls for their patience and teaching, I am crewing a 47ft yacht EH01 to Grenada instead.  I have crewed along the English South Coast and helmed at night in a storm in the Bay of Biscay so, perhaps, I have some idea of the adventure ahead - or maybe I don't? FRIDAY

We depart at 0800 wary of the snow forecast tonight. A steady climb to ‘base camp’ at 5350m, where we change our boots to hired La Sportiva B3 climbing boots, which are light and excellent, and crampons. We then traverse the large glacier and climb up a relentless slope to High Camp at 5800m, arriving at 1430 as the snow clouds open (with a standing 15min lunch en route!)   My legs tire more quickly than the inevitable breathlessness of the high altitude. I am pausing every 50 paces for a 30 second rest during the last hour but this method carries me up steadily. The snow deepens for the last 100m and steps become two at a time!  High camp is a ‘rent a tent’ set up. But these tents are a harsh environment at 5800m with a modest mattress and single layer cover. The snow fall becomes heavy and I am advised to bash clear the falling snow every 10minutes!! 18-24 inches rapidly falls in a few hours meaning the planned 2am ascent will not happen. Day 14 Moving again and final countdown.

  At last we started moving again yesterday, covering 156 miles in 24 hours compared to typically 120 the previous 3 days. And wind is due build further tomorrow to a satisfying 18-20 knots to hopefully blow us home for Wednesday morning. We have also gone from 5th to 4th! It's 5am now, and we just had the rare experience of a vortex under a big cloud. This caused sudden strong anti-clockwise winds blowing us further and further to port (left) until we had turned about 300 degrees and faced North, and then more gradually further round to our previous Westerly course. We are only 4 degrees North of Grenada now as we follow the trade wind and equatorial current to the Caribbean. It has been very hot in the afternoon but today brought much more light cloud with associated relief in the direct heat of the sun.
